Void

Vernissage: Monday, December 10, 6-9 pm

void txt

"In English the word void denotes an unused place, but also an unoccupied space. In practical usage, void is an occasional notion: a place, once occupied, was at some moment emptied, but soon it will be occupied again. Like on a plane, a train or a tramway: one person gets off and another gets on." Anda Rottenberg, Art Historian and Curator

Guest artist Birgitta Godlund from Sweden and EBA artists, Sarah Anderson, Heidi Conrod, Kenneth Emig, Juliana McDonald, Marika Jemma, Gayle Kells, Bozica Radjenovic, Carl Stewart, Sally Lee Sheeks, Svetlana Swinimer, Tavi Weisz, and Joyce Westrop, invite you to share their void in this exhibition at the Enriched Bread Artists Gallery.

At Enriched Bread Artists Gallery
951 Gladstone, 2nd floor, Ottawa
Exhibition continues December 11-16, 2012, 11am - 6 pm daily

Birgitta Godlund who lived and worked in Africa (mostly), Asia and the Middle East is naturally interested in issues of identity versus environment. Subjective and emotionally-charged feminist messages are angled with humor. The artist likes to evoke associations and engage the onlooker by pieces of mirror or painted glass, or by encouraging graffiti and comments in conceptual installations. Collages or collage-like paintings with fragments of landscapes or vegetation structures become psychological extensions of reality, especially when paired with human figures, objects, scrap and debris. The artist's personal imagery is a conscious balance between simplified outline drawing and color strokes/splashes in definite planes. The flowing technique dates back to the Chinese calligraphy she learned in the Far East. Saturated colors and the graphic shapes are part of her African luggage. Since 2008, Birgitta Godlund lives in Skåne, South Sweden.

Perched on the hill above Little Italy on the edge of Hintonburg, Enriched Bread Artists is housed on the first two floors of the old Standard Bread Factory circa 1924, when bread was delivered by horse and wagon. Close to 100 years old, some of the original architectural features remain both inside and outside the building. Recently assessed by the City’s Heritage Department, the elements of architecture unique to this “industrial” style include the outside brickwork, windows, flooring and large pillars on both floors. The factory was converted to more than 20 artists’ studios in 1993. (From City of Ottawa Open Doors booklet)

Italy: for Nikolais-Piri-Pai

Svetlana Swinimer presents: Svetlana Swinimer ITALY – for Nikolai Piri Pai
A travelogue in paintings

There will be a dance performance by Wendy Morrell at 2 PM

Nikolai Piri Pai is Svetlana Swinimer's new grandson, a new baby for her son and daughter-in-law, who live in Turin, Italy. Little Nikolai will be baptized there, on June 30th. Swinimer would have loved to attend, but travelling that far isn't always possible. She decided to mark the day here in Ottawa with an exhibition of a series of oil paintings, painted ten years ago when she visited a friend.

Svetlana Swinimer is a long-time member of the EBA. Born in Russia, Swinimer began her artistic career as a painter, and taught oil painting for six years at Moscow University. In 1975 she moved to Ottawa and took numerous courses on sculpture, watercolor, and art criticism at the Ottawa School of Art. Currently, she works in many different media, including sculpture and video. As this exhibition shows, however, Swinimer often returns to her first love, oil painting.

Wendy Morrell's lifelong love of dance as an expression of the sacred in mind, body and soul resulted in diverse dance studies (Modern, Improv, African, Hawaiian, Tibetan, etc). She has been Director of International Sacred Dance Festivals, facilitator of Dance Workshops and is the Artistic Director of a Community Dance Group—Moving Mysteries—in Ottawa.
